Ninteenth century revisited. Wow!

The day I travelled in a time machine. I left Billingham in bright sunshine and went through the four seasons, to eventually arrived in Haltwhistle, once again in bright sunshine but a few degrees colder. The village is quaint, in it's Hadrains Wall setting, but the shop was a delight. I met the most charming Lady, named Valerie, who stepped me through all the restoration process and quoted me a price, while calmly seeing to other customers, answering the phone and controlling the dogs. Thanks Val, I'm looking forward to returning to collect my restored Bible, Best regards, Pete.

A special corner of Book-lovers' Paradise.

This shop is a must for true bibliophiles. Got my treasured copy of John Ellison's poems here, published on the premises as "Shadowy Flowers of Orcus". Not only is Valerie a "midwife" delivering new poets' books to the public, but she is an artisan in her own right. Her drop-back books, notebooks, address-books, etc, all hand-made, and her excellent bookbinding are all works of art. There is also a marvellous selection of local prints. No wonder her trade is worldwide.

Jam today!
What a delight to hear that your move has been so successful. My partner and myself were customers at your first and second shops on 'Side' and again in Heaton. We plan to come and see you in Haltwhistle in 2005. Meanwhile there is this excellent website. Many thanks for the advice about set books for study; it's bearing fruit.

A super present if like something useful and unusal for a special friend

Just to let you know that the drop back book was well received by the Newsums, in fact they were delighted and thought it was a most useful prezy and very smart on their bookshelf.I think that their name on the spine will bring them brownie points with their friends, but of course they would not dream to play the oneupmanship game.A little bird tells me that there is a deluxe version of the db book and I look forward to seeing it.Who knows who could be the next recipient of one of your treasures.Good luck with the the sales, your talents deserve to be rewarded. Might we see it in the Telegraph?

Tremendous!

Not only is the bookshop great, Valerie's home made jam is truly excellent. If the book trade should dry up I'm sure that the jam will keep you afloat.
Visitors to this site should make the effort to visit this bookshop. Valerie is even more charming in real life than on the internet and the shop is how bookshops should be. You will want to buy books here and you will treasure them afterwards. Besides, you always wanted to see Hadrian's Wall - make the effort and visit Haltwhistle.
